Show the split: what you keep, what we keep, and what you never have to pay for.

Chapter Two — Protection

Your pages stay yours: fingerprinting, watermarking, and a $250K fund if someone steals your style.

Two things have always broken independent creators online: someone scraping finished pages to train a model, and someone printing a knock-off run from a different continent. Comicalia builds the tooling and the legal backstop for both.

01

AI-style-clone fingerprinting

Every page you upload is hashed into a 256-bit perceptual fingerprint and continuously scanned against the public web, the top 14 model-training corpora, and the listings of 47 print-on-demand partners. If a clone shows up, our trust & safety team is paged within 11 minutes — median takedown time is 4 hours, with a 92% success rate before the offending URL serves a single request.

  • 256-bit perceptual hash on every image at upload
  • Continuous scan across 14 model corpora + public web
  • 11-minute median detection, 4-hour median takedown
02

Invisible watermarking

Every preview image carries a steganographic watermark tied to the buyer session, so a leaked screenshot can be traced back to the account that pulled it. Watermarks survive resize, crop, and recompression down to 480px wide.

03

$250K Creator Indemnification Fund

If a knock-off run or a style-clone model ships commercially using your work and our standard enforcement fails, the Fund covers legal fees, expert witnesses, and any settlement — up to $250,000 per claim, paid directly to your counsel. 41 claims cleared in 2024.

04

Rights-respecting POD partners

Direct integrations with Lulu, IngramSpark, and Printful let you sell hardcover, softcover, and zine formats with zero inventory. Every partner is contractually bound to refuse third-party uploads of titles already in our catalog — the same fingerprint runs against their intake queues.

$250K per-claim legal coverage, paid to your counsel
3 print-on-demand partners, zero inventory required
14 former shop-owners on our curation & trust team
92% takedown success rate before first public view

Chapter Three — The Playbook

Day 1 to Day 14: the exact path to your first sale.

Median first-sale time for new Comicalia creators is 11 days. Here is how the cohort that beats that number actually does it — written by the 14 ex-shop-owners on our curation team after interviewing 600 first-time sellers.

  1. Day 1–2

Open the shop. Upload three things, not thirty.

Your storefront opens in 12 minutes. Upload one finished issue, one cover, and one process sketch. New sellers with 1–3 listings on day one convert 3.4× better than sellers who wait to publish a full catalog.

Tip from Mara, founder: the first listing should be the work you are least self-conscious about. It teaches the system what you make.

  2. Day 3–5

Opt in to Trending in Your Niche + curator pitch.

Turn on the niche dashboard (it refreshes every 15 minutes) and submit your strongest title to the weekly editor pitch form. 28% of accepted pitches land a curator pick within 72 hours; curator picks convert at 11.2% vs. the marketplace average of 1.8%.

Tip: pitch the issue, not the series. Curators buy a single sitting, not a 12-issue promise.

  3. Day 6–10

Wire up POD and announce a launch window.

Connect Lulu, IngramSpark, or Printful in one click — zero inventory, no upfront print cost. Set a 72-hour launch window with a 10% launch coupon. Creators who announce a window before listing convert 2.1× better than creators who "soft-open" quietly.

Tip: post the launch on Tuesday 9am ET. That window captures the highest buyer-side traffic of the week.

  4. Day 11–14

    First sale. Second listing. Repeat.

Median first sale: day 11. 92% of creators who hit a first sale go on to publish a second title within 6 months. The compounding part is the whole point: median creator earnings after 12 months sit at $2,400/month, with the top decile clearing $18K.

Tip: ship the second listing the same week as the first sale. Buyers who purchase once are 5.6× more likely to follow you than to find you again cold.

A note from the founders

“I spent nine years editing other people's comics at Dark Horse. The part I loved was calling a cartoonist to say their first print run had sold through. The part I hated was watching them give 60 cents of every dollar to a platform that had done nothing but hold a checkout button. We built Comicalia so that phone call could be the whole job — the artist on one end, the reader on the other, and a fair number on the invoice.”
